Abstract:

Using cross-functional team (CFT) is a suitable strategy for improving the performance of organizations. The member selection problem is an important aspect of the CFT formation. Several evidences showed the important criteria for choosing true members are: cooperation and coordination, functional expertise, individual abilities, cost, and communication. In this paper, effective features for member selection are identified and a multi-objective 0– 1 nonlinear programming model is developed. This model is developed by using individual and collaborative performance. Afterward, it is converted into the linear form by changing variables to solve it more easily. The proposed model is used in the real example in Census cross-functional team in the statistical center of Iran and required data were collected by surveys and interviews. The results indicate that this proposed model has better performance compared to recommendation of experts and can be used in other fields.

Abstract:

This paper investigates the relationship between the Board of directors' characteristics and audit firms' selection in companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange. A sample of 77 companies in the total level and the level of industries were examined. In addition, a Binary classification has been used to split the audit firms into Audit Organization and other audit firms. The present study considers the percentage of non-bounded Board members, educational degree, duality and changes in members as the corporate Board's attributes.Binary Logistic regression has been applied to test the research hypothesis at α= 5%.The results indicate a significant relationship only between the educational degree and the audit firm's selection, and therefore no significant relationships were found for the other attributes.

Abstract:

Objective The selection of Board members used to take place before any in-depth review of the Board's foundational existence, without any specific regulations and solely through informal means such as kinship, long-standing friendships, or collaboration and shared interests. This approach often led to an inappropriate Board composition, a lack of sufficient expertise, and ultimately a decline in organizational efficiency. Therefore, the process of selecting Board members has various consequences for organizations. Given the existing information gap regarding the selection of Board members in Iran, this study aims to develop a model for Board member selection, identifying the criteria that matter most to shareholders in this process.   Methods The present research employs the thematic analysis method. The statistical population includes CEOs and Board members of Iranian investment companies and holdings. The statistical sample was selected using the snowball sampling method. Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 experts, reaching theoretical saturation.   Results When selecting Board members, various criteria—such as individual and group characteristics—are taken into account. Individual characteristics refer to qualities specific to each Board member, including inherent traits, communication skills, managerial and leadership abilities, professional ethics, expertise, and social competencies. In addition, company-specific factors also influence the selection process. Clearly defining the expectations and mission of Board members within the organization is essential to ensure alignment with these requirements.   Conclusion Four main themes were identified for Board member selection: (1) characteristics of Board members, (2) requirements for their selection, (3) factors influencing the selection process, and (4) desirable outcomes of selecting Board members. Board member characteristics include individual and group characteristics. Personal characteristics refer to traits specific to an individual serving as a Board member. These can be categorized into seven key themes: intrinsic qualities, communication skills, managerial abilities, leadership capabilities, professional ethics, specialized expertise, and social competencies. Intrinsic characteristics of Board members reflect their unique personal backgrounds and personality traits. Communication characteristics pertain to creating and maintaining good collaboration among themselves, shareholders, management, and other individuals. Managerial characteristics relate to the qualities and abilities of a Board member that demonstrate their effectiveness. Leadership characteristics include traits related to leadership style and the strategic outlook of Board members. Professional ethics characteristics involve observing fairness and ethics during the decision-making process. Specialized characteristics include skills and knowledge that a Board member should have in line with the company's activities, such as experience, academic qualifications, industry-related expertise, etc. Social characteristics refer to an individual’s reputation, social connections, and interactions with others, including both internal and external organizational stakeholders. Group characteristics of Board members pertain to a balanced composition in which members collectively possess diverse expertise relevant to the company. Selecting desirable Board members leads to an improvement in the company's working environment, efficiency, and performance.

Abstract:

Purpose: Managers are one of the important elements of an organization, for this reason, in order to draw the future of the organization, it is necessary for the planners to specify the conditions of their selection and appointment. Therefore, the current research has been done with the aim of identifying and analyzing the components of selecting future principals.Method: In this research, comparative and benchmarking method is used as a prospective approach. This approach is based on the belief that today's advanced organizations/countries can be considered as a model for the future of another organization/countries in their respective subjects. For this, first, the fields of comparison and benchmarking were determined using Brody's four-step comparison method; then the countries of Canada, Finland, Australia, South Africa, and Japan were selected according to the qualitative balance value in the international advanced TEAMS test, human development index, life quality index(health, instruction, and welfare), education quality index, and other scientific-scholarly indexes; finally, by extracting the criteria for the selection and appointment of principals through content analysis and comparison with Iran, the proposed framework for Iran has been presented.Findings: A total of 61 components for the selection of secondary school principals were identified from among the studies conducted in the selected countries in this article. By extracting the commonalities and differences of each of the components among the countries, it was found that the highest index of manager selection and appointment belongs to Japan and the lowest one is related to Finland. Conclusion: There are similarities between the components of selection of principals of secondary schools in Iran and selected countries. In Iran, special attention should be paid to important components such as adherence to religious principles, appropriate personality traits, creativity and innovation, motivation to develop capabilities, professional growth, power of supervision and accountability, social image, leader skills, and purposefulness and foresight.

Abstract:

Decision making is on the most important roles of a manager. Meanwhile, selection of effective input variables on decision making or forecasting problems, is one of the most important dilemmas in forecasting and decision making field. Due to research and problem constraints, we cannot use all of known variables for forecasting or decision making in real world applications. Thus, in decision making problems or system simulations, we are trying to select important and effective variables as good data.In this paper we proposed a hybrid model of Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to determine and select effective variables on forecasting and decision making process. In this model, genetic algorithm has been used to code the combination of effective variables and neural network as a fitness function of genetic algorithm. The introduced model is applied in a case study to determine effective variables on forecasting future dividend of the firms that are members of Tehran stock exchange.
